Destination help

My wife and I are going south by train out of Trieste in August. I am looking for a place to stop overnight that would be close to a train station somewhere between Trieste and Salerno. We are booked for the next night in Amalfi area, so somewhere that's roughly halfway, that might be a 'must see' destination with things to see within walking distance from a BnB or hotel etc. I don't think Rome is an option, simply because I don't want to be rushed in Rome. When we go there, I want to spend a week exploring more of it.

Suggestions? Ready - GO!

Thanks!

Orvieto would be a nice overnight stop. So, train to Rome and quick train to there, still... a long travel day. Or perhaps Bologna? It’s on the main line from Venice to Rome. Have not been, but Bologna has been getting a lot of love on the forums these days.

Bologna is a little less than halfway and would be a good choice for 1 night. Another option would be Florence, which is just over halfway. After that you're in Rome and then Naples, so Bologna and Florence are your best options along the main rail line. Off the main rail line you could stop in Orvieto, but that detour adds to your total travel time.

The most convenient thing to do would be to stop in Bologna because it’s a main rail hub. Orvieto is a beautiful experience but it would necessitate a number of train changes to get there and then to go from there to Salerno.

In Trieste try the seafood risotto at Hostoria Malcanton. Tastes like it was made by angels. Great seafood restaurant. Another good place if you want a take on the Viennese influence is Osteria Bier Stube. In Bologna we had very good meals at Ristorante Il Saraceno, Via Calcavinazzi, 2.
