I have hotel reservations for 3 nights in each place: Milan, Bellagio (Lake Como, and Sirimone (Lake Garda). I plan to go to Milan and get off at Cordona station. Then to Bellagio, and from there to Sirmione. What are the best (easiest) transportation suggestions with one medium size suitcase. Hearing horror stories about getting on and off trains carrying luggage! You guys are the best, so please advise! Mercedes, Newport, RI
Are you alone?
Mercedes:
First try to pack light: one 21" rollaboard and a daypack or messenger bag. That carried me through 3+ weeks, and I could handle it all myself. Trains are great. Are you arriving at MXP? You can take a train to either Cadorna station or Centrale. Different trains; choice depends on what is closest to your hotel. One key to mananging on trains is to be ready to board when the train pulls into the station, and also ready to deboard when your stop is coming up. On boarding, you'll have time to swing that suitcase up to the top step, climb in and grab your bag. You can usually stow luggage overhead, behind your seat, or at the end of the car on a luggage rack, depending on the train configuration. Have a fun trip!
One of the most important things to remember is to be ready to get off the train BEFORE you arrive at your destination. This is especially true for the smaller stations. The train might stop for only a minute or two, then those doors close and off it goes. You'll want to be waiting at or near the door with your bags down before the train stops.
I am alone and am enroute to Florence for a month. Forgot to say that I want to leave from Sirmione to Florence on the 24th. It looked doeable, but maybe not.
