Deruta ceramics

Considering a side trip to Deruta while in Umbria. Would love recommendations on best places/specific shops for quality ceramics in the area. Grazie mille!

You will see the road lined with ceramics as you drive into Deruta, rather overwhelming. However, there is an extra special shop, Ubaldo Grazia which was founded in Deruta in 1500. We bought several beautiful pieces there which they packed and shipped to our home in the US. I highly recommend their shop. www.ubaldograzia.com

You really need to browse around at the various shops. Most of them are in close proximity to each other. If you ask about vat refund, you may get an offer of 10% discount instead. Many, if not all, will ship purchases. We bought quite a lot at Marcucci. Also, a piece at Mulli (?). The top producer at the time we were there was Grazia who sold to places like Bloomingdales in the U.S.

I believe there is a ceramics museum, also, in the town..

I didn’t visit Deruta while in Umbria, but I did buy some beautiful hand painted ceramics at a small shop in Siena (conveniently located next door to my B&B)

The shop owners, mother and daughter, explained that all the ceramics they sell come from a very special shop in Deruta.

I just checked one of the pieces I bought,
and this is what’s inscribed on the bottom of it: “Gialletti Giulio Deruta Dec. a mano. Italy”

And guess what? I just found their website: ceramichegialletti.com

Now I definitely want to visit Deruta!

Enjoy your time in beautiful Umbria!

Our Rick Steves tour in 2016 took us to Ceramiche Artistiche Gialletti Giulio in Deruta. I love the pieces that I brought home!

November 2021 we bought several things from FIMA in Deruta and a whole set of dishes from Grazia. A few small items from another store. The guy in FIMA shipped to us not only everything we bought in Deruta that day, but also ceramics we’d bought earlier in the trip in Orvieto. AND, since we wouldn’t be home for another few weeks, he held off shipping our box until then. Packed well and arrived safely.

Pricilla the ceramic shop in Siena you referred to is Riproduzioni d'Arte Senese on Via delle Terme. It is still there and it is our favorite ceramic shop in Siena. Unfortunately, the mother (Rosalba) has passed away but the daughter, Valentina, continues to run the shop. All their pieces are from Gialletti Giulio in Deruta.

So to all of you, if you can't visit Deruta, visit Riproduzioni d'Arte Senese in Siena!

Aww… Thanks for the update. Yes, that’s the shop. When I visited Siena (2017) I met Valentina & her mother, Rosalba, and they were both kind and very helpful.
Now I wish I would have bought more ceramics!
