Hello all. What is the best options for departing post RS Sicily tour. I was think a flight back to Rome but haven’t been able to find flights that work to connect to flight home without additional nights in Rome. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
There might not be an easier way. I flew from Catania to Rome one day, then home to Philadelphia the next.
We flew Catania to Rome to London, spent a night at LHR, flew to US the next day
We flew United Airlines from Catania to Frankfurt, then on to Washington DC. The layover in Frankfurt was about 4 hours.
We took this tour in 2016, and flew from Catania to Rome in the early afternoon of the final tour day. After staying overnight in the Eternal City, we flew home to Boston. Flying back to the US in one day would probably involve a grueling multi-stop flight with a very early morning departure. We found that the two flight option was a lot cheaper than the choice of flying back all in one day, so much so that it paid for the extra night in Rome. Also, having to leave very early on he last day of the tour kind of messes up the day before, and causes you to miss the final breakfast. In this regard, leaving early sort of breaks the magic spell surrounding the tour experience.
I completed the Best of Sicily tour in June. I flew Catania - Rome - JFK - LAX. It was not pretty. I had fallen on the tour and my leg was not in the best shape to begin with, but all those connections and the Rome - JFK flight being 3 hours late was a harrowing journey. Though I missed my original connection in JFK, there were a couple of later flights which allowed me to make it home by midnight Pacific time. I'm thankful as I would have had to layover in JFK. Yuck!
Anyway, you may need to stay a night in Rome. The Rome Airport Hilton is right off the airport property so makes for an easy layover. Have you considered whether or not it might be better to go back to Palermo and get a flight from there? Or I believe a couple of people on my tour connected out of Catania via Frankfurt (Lufthansa/United).
Please be aware this summer's flights are a mess. Things may not go the way you expect them to. Hope you enjoy the Sicily tour. I certainly did.
