decent budget hotel near Rome airport and hotel in Sorento?

Could someone give me a recommendation please for a decent, safe, reasonably priced hotel with 24/7 shuttle service near the Fiumcino Airport in Rome (due to an early flight)? Also, after visiting Pompeii, could someone recommend a nice, but not overly expensive hotel or B & B to stay at in Sorento after a nice day visiting Pompeii? (It does not have to be as budget as the airport because this will be our last memorable day in Italy; however, I cannot afford too pricey. Lastly, is Sorento worthwhile to see?
Many thanks! Ruth

Ruth, there are 35+ accommodations within 5-7 kilometers of the FCO airport. Most advertise a shuttle but DO make sure it will be operating! Having a 24 hour shuttle sitting out front but not having a driver available until 07:00 may not help you. For some suggestions on the "best-ranked" hotels in the FCO area by venere.com and booking.com guests, a map, plenty of photos, and some SHUTTLE information, you might read this article for assistance. My friends recommend the Hotel Seccy on those lists. Good Luck!

And you'll get better responses if you identify what "budget" means to you in Euros. Happy travels.

Ruth Ruth You have received excellent advice on getting to Pompeii from Rome. Also check Rick Steves Italy Guide When you get to Pompeii, I suggest you do use a tour guide either the ones at the site or arrange for a guide in advance. If you search the Helpline you will find one guide used by RS readers get rave reviews. If Pompeii is a favorite for you, it is worth the $$ for the guide! Sorrento I would also urge you to go to Sorrento. Such a different experience from the cities you have seen. Take the Circumvesuviana (commuter train) to Sorrento from Pompeii. Rather than take a flight back from Rome, consider returning from Naples. Usually, you still can do a one stop flight home from Naples for the same amount or not much higher. There is a Curreri bus from Sorrento directly to the Naples airport several times a day (1.25 hrs.) www.curreriviaggi.it. This saves you time (Sorrento to Naples, Naples to Rome Termini and then Termini to Rome Airport), aggravation (saves 2 stops dragging luggage around) , and lots of money (see above). If you have to leave for the US from Rome, take the Curreri www.curreriviaggi.it or Marovzzi marozzivt.it bus. There are limited departures but it is really cheap 17 Euros or so one way. 4 hours, 2 quick stops, very nice coach bus. Leaves from Sorrento's train station. It arrives at the Tiburtina Train Station not the Termini. Their websites are a little confusing so you could wait until you get to Italy and have your guide or hotel help you with the booking. This is all in RS Italy book on the sections for Sorrento, Rome, and Pompeii. His books are totally practical for just this kind of transportation question. And of course his sightseeing recommendations and info is unparalelled! Buon Viaggio! Bobbie

We stayed at Hotel Antiche Mura in Sorrento and it was a real treat! Very close to Piazza Tasso (main square), a 10 minute walk from the train station, lovely breakfast buffet and great staff. Winter rates were good; not sure what they'll charge in summer but worth a look. In winter they were far less expensive than most options in Sorrento.
