December Itinerary

We've been convinced that Cinque Terre in December won't be our wisest choice, thanks to the helpful advice we've received from fellow posters. We're now thinking of revising our itinerary to possibly hit the Amalfi Coast, taking advantage of a bit larger cities and going further south. Does the following sound doable?

Dec. 25 Arrive Rome
Dec. 26-27 Rome
Dec. 28-29 Amalfi Coast/Pompeii (Base in Sorrento?...any good hotels?)
Overnight train to Florence (Or better to train during the day?)
Dec.30-31 Florence
Jan. 1 Train to Rome
Jan. 2-3 Rome

Thanks for any ideas and suggestions to help us make the most of our trip!

Are you arriving Rome on Christmas Day? If so read up on what's open and what's not-I heard that Rome is very much closed on Christmas day-Not sure about taxi, bus, train...

Yes, we are arriving on Christmas Day. We have our transportation all set, though I appreciate the heads up. Since it's a travel day, we'll be spending our time strolling and getting acclimated, so we aren't concerned about museums, etc. being open.
