Hi! My family will be visiting Florence December 16-22 and we would like to take a day trip to the Cinque Terre. Any advice on how to set this up?
Thanks!
Sandy
Take the train to La Spezia, then transfer to the train that goes up the coast to the various towns.
If you google “Florence to Manarola” (for example) then click on the train symbol, you will see the options. Tickets might not be available this far out. But it’s going to take almost 3 hours each way. Download the Trenitalia app for more ticket info.
Of course, the advisability of visiting the Cinque Terre in December is another question.
I suggest you research the Cinque Terre in winter. I believe it is mostly shut down, and I imagine rather grim.
You may want to consider another day trip. Mid-December is not the best time to visit the Cinque Terre, as the weather is often not too pleasant. Also, most of the hotels and tourist-related businesses will be closed for the season, and at that time of year people will be getting ready for Christmas. I can tell you from experience that taking a day trip to the C.T. from Florence is a long and often tiring day, and will typically involve one or more train changes each way.
Expect to spend about 7.5 hours on trains and going to and from stations.
