December Attire in Italy

Does anyone have suggestions for what to wear in Italy during this season? We are familiar with RS tours, but have not traveled in Europe during the winter. We assume the need for a warm coat/jacket, but are gloves, scarves, sweaters, raingear/umbrellas, boots, long underwear needed? Also, in the cities, would more dressy clothing be suggested? We will be there on Christmas as well as for New Year's Eve. Any help with this from those of you who have been in Italy during the winter holidays is appreciated! Thanks.

We were in Rome(on Christmas)then Pisa,Lucca,Siena and Venice(on New Year's Day)last year.In Rome,it was so warm that we barely needed our coats. Many cafes were serving outdoors. We all took our silk long undies, but I was the only one who wore them (under my skirts). In Florence,Siena and Venice I always wore my hat, scarf and gloves,(usually with a sweater, skirt and boots).I noticed so many Italian women wearing wonderful flat heeled boots that I couldn't find in America, so I bought another pair of much more comfortable boots in Lucca.I always tried to look dressy, but my teenage daughters looked fine in their jeans. The weather was very comfortable. We also brought small travel umbrellas, but the only rain we encountered was a fine mist in Venice, and we didn't need them. But in winter you never know, so it's best to be prepared.Long johns, hats, gloves, etc. take little space. Also, everything except long undies would be easy to buy in Italy.Be prepared and have fun
