December advice

I need advice on our itinerary for December.
Cruise ends on 22 December in Venice. We did Venice, Florence and Rome Dec 2018.
Any advice on towns that are must sees?
We love Italy and usualy visit in summer but aren't sure were to go this year. Yes, I know, so many choices!
Would prefer staying in one place and do day trips say for 5 days before moving on to another town.
Will make use of public transport.
We are two couples in our sixties and love historic towns, good food and wine.
Thank you

If you would be driving, I would have immediately said go to Puglia or Sicily.

Using public transportation, however, you could easily do a Parma, Modena, Bologna, Ferrara, Ravenna (plus several day excursions) trip. We did that one December, staying about 5 nights in each except Ferrara. You could add about three nights in Milan, too, then fly out from there.

Another option is Verona, Padua, Mantua, Vicenza, Treviso, plus a few day trips into wine country --- that's the future trip we just planned.

Both areas are easily and quickly reachable by train from Venice.

You haven’t mentioned how many days you have to spend on this after-cruise trip.
