Debit card PIN limitations

Wondering if anyone know if ATMs in Italy and Spain will accept DEBIT cards with a 6 digit PIN.

My bank will not allow PINs other than 6 digits for my debit card. I was in France and I know that it is fine there. But in Canada, most bank ATMs will only accept a 4 digit PIN. I was in Vancouver recently and the ATM will not return my card after several tries. It was a real pain as I cannot get a replacement card till I get home. Copilot said to change the PIN to 4 digits before going to Canada. But my bank will not allow anything other than 6 digit PINs. It is a master card debit card and the bank told me to contact master card. But I have not found any help there yet.

Now I am travelling to Spain and Italy and Sicily. Just checking if anyone know of any restrictions like this there.

I thought six digits was fine except I have not been in Spain or Italy for about three years.

You should be fine. My Italian atm card has a 5 digit PIN, which is very common in Italy, but I’ve heard that new cards have also 6.

You could open a second account with a 4 digit pin on the new card.
Always a good idea to have cards from a couple of different accounts when traveling.

@Allan Hi where are you located in Canada. I was in Vancouver and every bank I went to only take 4 digit PIN at their ATMs. Maybe this is only in BC?

Sorry to hear that happened to you. Yes at least 2 of our largest banks use 4 digit PINs for bank machines.

Most of our banks operate Canada wide. I did a quick search though and you may have had bad luck. RBC and TD allow 6 digit, CIBC apparentlyhas no limit, Scotiabank and BMO are 4 digits.

Thanks for the responses. I went to Vancity, BMO, CIBC and Scotia bank in downtown Vancouver. All the ATMs there says to enter 4 digit PIN.

I'm also from Canada and deal with both credit unions and banks. With all cards my PIN's are only four digits. I've never bothered to check to see if five or six digit PIN's are allowed?

You may be able to provide at least a partial solution to the PIN issue (at least for purchases) by linking your card to the wallet in your phone. The majority of my transactions are completed with my phone, so I rarely have to enter a PIN. Unfortunately that won't work with ATM's, at least not yet.

I'll have to check with my card issuers to see if they allow more than four digits.
