Debit card code - 4 or 6 numbers?

I have a 6 number code on my VISA. I just read that Italy ATM's only accept a 4 number code. Is that correct?

I have used a 6 number code in Spain, England, Belgium, France, Turkey, Venice, etc. and never had a problem. Is this something new? I leave for Italy in about 10 days and so have time to change the code if necessary. Rick doesn't mention anything about using 4 or 6 number codes in his travel guides.

Thanks much,

Sharon

ATM's in Europe must have a minimum 4 digit number security code. I would suggest you change your code with your bank.

Remember that if you run into a merchant that won't take your American Visa card without a chip, they can just take the time to manually key in your card numbers and expiration dates--and get your written signature.

Thank you both.

It was on a travel blog. It was a recommendation by Master Card to have a 4 digit code and then, even though VISA accepts 6 at this point (2012), it was also recommended to change the VISA code to 4 numbers. Then a couple of people had problems with their 6 digit code and I was just wondering if things had changed since I was in Turkey, or if it is just different in Italy.

I think I got my answer!
