Don't forget Naples, my husband & I went as a day trip from Sorrento and it was by far one of our favorite days (out of a month of traveling). The self-guided walk in Rick's book is a great way to see the city in a short(er) amount of time - if you go, be sure not to miss the Archeology Museum (probably the least crowded museum in Italy, and totally mind-blowing), the veiled Christ sculpture in Sansevero Chapel, or some phenomenal pizza at Da Michele.

A hydrofoil ride to Naples, tour thru Palazzo Reale, stroll thru Galleria Umberto, Ricks' "Spaccanapoli walk"'
Pizza in Piazza Bellini at Restoranti Bellini. then the Archeological Museum, train back to Sorrento. If you like ceramics, Vietri Sul Mare (train to salerno then bus to Vietri. Walk along the beach and "discover" long lost pottery shards...they make great mosaics Finally,Ravello...a magical place Have fun!

Did forget to mention Naples. We loved it the walk in RS book and the food is fantastic. Do learn to cross with the natives of the city, they really don't stop for red lights or expect you to cross on green. It was one of our favorite crowded cities.

Amalfi and Ravello too. Sorrento itself is quite pleasant to walk around in.

HI Sally MY wife and I spent 6 days in Sorrento last year-wonderful place to be and great to day trip from. We took bus to Amalfi Boat to Capri Train to Pompeii Boat to Naples. All great and easy and enjoyable to get to. I second Rick Steeves day tour of Naples suggestions and the beautiful archeological museum, but Naples beyond museums-not so nice. Would like to have gone to Positano-but do rececommend Amalfi-hike back through the town into the citrus groves Enjoy Mike DC
