We're staying on the Amalfi Coast next month and are planning an entire day visiting Paestum (ruins, museum, caseificio, beach, etc.). My concern is making sure that we can access tickets for the regional train from Salerno. I've read different posts about getting there by train but I still haven't seen any definite.
How will you be getting to Salerno? Hydrofoil, ferry, bus? If by bus, it will most likely be the SITA bus. If you are staying north of Amalfi, you will need to change buses in Amalfi to get to Salerno. At the Salerno train station, you can alsways buy a ticket on the Regionale train. Regionale trains in Italy are more like buses than AMTRAK, you buy your ticket, validate your ticket in the little yellow box, get on and find your own seat. No seat reservations permitted. If no seats, you can stand. No conductor checking your name as your board or anything like that. There are 13 trains a day to and from Paestum from Salerno.
Mike, you can get there by train, a few stop each day. Paestum is a train stop, not a train station, so when you buy the ticket to Paestum, get a return ticket as well. You may save a euro or two by buying a roundtrip ticket. Be sure to check the timetables for your return trip so you have enough time to do everything you want to do. And, if you want to see the museum, it's closed on Monday, but there is a combined ticket for the ruins and museum. If you decide to spend the night, a great hotel is the Poseidonia al Mare, near the beach (they have a cabana arrangement with another property) and 1km from the ruins (they will loan you bikes if you prefer not to walk). Take time to look for roses at the ruins - they've been famous in Paestum for about 2500 years.
For our first three nights on the coast, we're staying in the small town of Minori so we plan on taking the SITA bus back to Salerno for our train to Paestum. The information so far is great, thanks guys! Zoe: I didn't know about the roses. My wife will love that as well.
