daytrip from rome to naples & pompeii

I'm planning to follow Rick's daytrip suggestion but I'm confused about the trains. I've seen some posts saying to take Eurostar while some say Trenitalia from Rome to Naples. Are they the same thing? If not, which one is better? Thank you!

Regarding which one is better? It depends on how fast you want to get there. I am doing the same thing you are (day trip from Rome). In order to have as much time in Naples and Pompeii as I can, I plan on spending a little extra money and taking the faster train.

Claudette,

Just to clarify some details regarding the trains in Italy.

The train you'll need to take from Rome to Naples is the EuroStar Italia / Alta Velocita. That's the "fast train" operated by Trenitalia which is a part of Gruppo Ferrovie Dello Stato. While this is similar in many ways to the EuroStar that runs from London to Paris and Brussels, it's not operated by the same company.

The ES / AV is a good choice for the trip from Rome to Naples, as it's FAST. That particular daytrip makes for a LONG day, so maximizing your time in Pompeii (by minimizing your travel times) is important.

When you arrive in Naples, you'll transfer to the Circumvesuviana train, which is not owned by Trenitalia. You can check their website at www.vesuviana.it/web/en for further details. Some of the Circumvesuviana cars appear to be "old clunkers", but they'll get you where you're going. Be sure to wear a Money Belt!

Hope this helps?

Happy travels!
