I really like Stresa on Lake Maggiore. Isola Bella for the gorgeous garden & villa; Isola Pescatori for lunch.
Bergamo has the Citta Alta.

Depending on your interests, all less than an hour from Milano Centrale:
Turin - Egyptian Museum, Automobile Museum
Como - the centro storico,, hop ferries to some of the small towns on the lake, take the funicular up to Brunate for spectacular views of the city, lake and alps.
Bergamo - though I have not been there, I’ve read many favorable reviews in the Forum.
