We will be in Rome for 6 days in October. Besides Orvieto, what other day trips can I take from Rome?
there are several great day trips to make outside of Rome. You can go to Naples and visit Pompeii and Herculaneum. You can visit Florence. You can visit Ostia Antica. Hadrian's villa is a wonderful day trip. Pompeii is about 2 hours from Rome. You must take the train to Naples and then the commuter train out to the ruins. All in all just under 2 hours to and from. It's a great way to spend the day. Leave early and come back late to make the most of your time. Florence is just over an hour from Rome. Again, leave early and come back late. Make reservations at the gallery to skip the lines. Ostia Antica is half an hour outside of Rome. Just take the metro to the pyramide stop then change to the train heading to Ostia Lido. Get off at the ostia scavi stop. Donna
Buy the RS Rome book for lots of helpful info on daytrips, including all the details on how to actually do them. We've done Ostia Antica and loved it.
We just returned yesterday. Do go to Orvieto. It was easy. On the second class train, it took 1 hour 15 minutes. We loved this town and could have spent longer there. It was Sunday though, and the train was packed coming back into Rome. We also went to Ostia Antica. It was very interesting also and nice to get out of the city for the day.
As well as the spots mentioned, I also love Spoleto, another beautiful Umbrian hilltown, but not as touristy as Orvieto. www.revealedrome.com
Assisi! It is absolutely beautiful, easy to get to, and doesn't have that many activities to require longer than a day. I loved Orvieto too, especially at dusk when it glows. Honestly, depending on your train patience you could go nearly anywhere! I have gone to Siena, Verona, Florence, Orvieto, Siena, Perugia (not that exciting at all), Pompeii, Naples, Vicenza (which I don't recommend above any of the others), and Lucca as day trips from Rome! I went in August to Italy with my sister and the three day trips we chose to do from Rome were Assisi, Orvieto, and Siena. I definitely say to do Assisi and Orvieto, and whatever else you pick I am fairly certain you will love!
