Days to Spare In Italy Need Suggestions

I am traveling to Italy and will be visiting rome florence and venice I have 4 days to spare at the end and I will be departing from Rome what will be the best place to go to for these extra 4 days. Should I spend them all back in Rome or go somewhere else before arriving in Rome. My tour ends in Venice I have to go to Rome to take my flight back. I have never been in Italy so I am not sure how to best spend this days. Of my tour 3 days will be in Rome 3 in Florence and 2 in Venice. Thanks

Hmm, you have a few options, you could spend the night in Rome and then head to the Amalfi Coast the next day using Sorento as a home base and then return to Rome. On your way to Sorento you can see Pompeii. Or you can head straight to Sorento from Venice. You can't go wrong!

Nice problem to have Merce!

You say your tour ends in Venice and you have 4 days to get to Rome for your flight out. I'd pick an agriturismo in Tuscany or Umbria and explore from there!

Just as an extra piece of info. I will be using the rail system not a car. So hopefully it is something not too complex for this kind of travel. Appreciate all your suggestions

My inclination would be to spend additional days in either Venice or Rome and get to see some of the things that the whirlwind travelers never do. What kinds of things do you enjoy doing? Will you be alone or with someone for those extra days?

I am going with 3 other people. This trip will probably be a once in a lifetime chance for me that is why your input is very valuable.

Merce, If your trip is ending in Venice and you need to make your way to Rome, you might think about a slow trip back to Rome enjoying some towns along the way. There are numerous choices, all of which would probably make a wonderful choice. I would think about Making my way to Lake Como, around Varenna, and then maybe a night or two in Cinque Terra. I f this is really a once in a lifetime trip, these would be two wonderful places to see. If these do not apeal to you, think about Siena, It is a wonderful place to explore as well. Good luck, and Enjoy. Caio, Jeff

If you are sticking to the rails - I'd skip the agriturismo that I mentioned earlier. Those are hard without a car.

I'd do 2 extra nights in either Venice or Florence and 2 extra nights in Rome. You can see some of things the tour skipped!

Safe travels!

Once you spend a couple of days in Rome, you will probably want to go back for a few more days. As far as I am concerned, you could spend a month in Rome and not even dent the surface.

Look into spending 1-2 days in Ravenna (a short train ride from Venice). Stunning Byzantine mosaics.

I might catch some grief for this, but if this really may be your once in a lifetime visit to Italy I would seriously consider using two or three of your spare days in Sorrento so you can see the Amalfi coast, Capri, and Pompeii. It will be a demanding schedule, but I think it would be worth it.

Here's another vote for Sorrento. It's absolutely beautiful and a great place to end a trip to Italy.

I would go back to Florence and consider day trips to Siena, Pisa, Lucca, San Gimgnano or other spots within an hour of Florence. It puts you a little closer to Rome and these places would be great dayb trips. Buon viaggi!

I know that I'm putting my two cents in yet again, but if you visited the Amalfi Coast you would be seeing another aspect of Italy. One of the most memorable things of my visits to Italy was the ferry rides to the beautiful seaside towns of the Amalfi Coast. I only spent 2 days there and it was so worthwhile. Yes it would add a little craziness in terms of travel but it is so worth it. And don't forget Pompeii!

Hi Merce:

Sorrento is my vote too! It offers a completely different flavor of Italy and well worth the trip.

Of course, as others have said, Rome is a city that offers sights and experiences that can extend well beyond three days.

Whatever you choose, have a great time.

July on the Amalfi Coast is hot but bearable - the sea winds cool things off nicely in the evening.

We are going to bardolino on lake garda, less than 2 hours from venice, for their annual wine festival oct 3 2010. Haven't been there but heard it's very nice. you can look at lakegardaexclusively.com and see if you and your friends want to explore. Happy travels.

While scheduling might be tight, Pompeii for three or four nights would give you a leisurely opportunity to see those ruins and at Herculaneum, Two or three hours in the morning; mid-day break and lunch; an evening visit when the crowds thin out and it's cooler.

We discovered an afternoon break was a necessity, even though we walk miles per day at home. The uneven basalt paving of Pompeii takes its toll on your feet and ankles. And there is very little shade on a sunny day.

Another perk from staying over: the incredible day and evening programs now being offered at the Pompeii site - Pompeii by Bike, Pompeii at Night, an Evening for Star Gazers, etc.

Trains to and from Pompeii are easy if you are traveling light and not wrestling a lot of luggage up and down station platforms.

Ravenna would be a nice little side trip. Close to Venice and the mosaics are great. All the sites you would want to see are within a few minutes walking of each other. San Marino is'nt that much further away either.
