Days in Rome and Amalfi Coast

We are looking at the Rick Steve’s Best of Italy next May. There is only a day and half in Rome is that long enough?

Also, we are thinking of taking a few day on our own to travel to the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento. Suggestions on the minimum number of days to add and then suggestions for mode of travel.

Thanks,

Steve H

Oh gosh no that’s not enough time in Rome,
Add a minimum of 4 nights, probably still not enough

Sorrento 3-4 minimum if you want to day trip to Pompeii, Capri, Naples?
Amalfi 2-3 or really whatever time you can give it.

Travel by train from Rome, use ferries and buses or private driver on Amalfi

We spent 4 nights Sorrento, 2 Amalfi, 1 Ravello , 2 Salerno
It was great

Not sure where that particular tour ends- if Rome, you could head to Sorrento/Amalfi after just those 2 days in Rome on the tour-then return to Rome for 3-4? Nights before flying out of Rome
OR
Stay in Rome extra days right after tour, then add Sorrento/ Amalfi and fly home form Naples.

You’ll want to be in your departure city the night before your flight, so plan accordingly.

Welcome to the forum!

Hi Shusak,

Honestly 1.5 days in Rome is too little to get a taste of the main attractions, I would reconsider that time and what you would like to accomplish in Rome. As far as Amalfi goes, there is so much to see as well but Sorrento is definitely a great base. I have done 3 days in Sorrento and took day trips to Capri and Amalfi/Positano. If you can do more, there is definitely lots of things to do and places to see, but if you have time constraints pick your must see places and go from there.

How much time or days in these places? As many as you can manage really...

I think a decent three full days/four nights in Rome gets you a good opportunity to see the main sights. However, even really aggressive sightseeing will leave a lot of stones unturned. Rome is a bottomless pit of wonderful sights and experiences.

Amalfi Coast/Naples area really needs a full week to begin to give it its due. There’s SO much to see in this region it’s not even funny. Read up, decide your priorities, and then figure out if you can do it. It’s really worth its own trip.
