Day trips out of Florence

My husband and I are spending 8 days in Florence and would like to take a day trip or two. What are your favorites?

Maren,

One of the easiest day trips would be to visit Siena. Taking the Bus is a better option for that one, as you'll be dropped right in the centre of town rather than at the bottom of the hill where the station is located. The trip is about an hour each way as I recall.

Although slightly longer, another day trip that you could consider is the Cinque Terre. It would be better to spend a few days there, but if you only have time for a day trip, it's certainly possible. The trip will be about 2-3 hours in each direction, with at least one change.

There's also Lucca or Pisa. Lots of choices from Florence! When will this trip be taking place?

Happy travels!

I did a guided tour with Roberto from Rick's Book and TV show around Tuscany and different vineyards. He picked us up from our hotel in Siena but they will also pick you up from your hotel in Florence. Our day with Roberto was one of the highlights of our trip. Google tours by roberto and his website comes up. You can see the different places around Tuscany you can choose from.

Longer day trips are Assisi or the CT. It takes about 2.5hrs each way on the train to and from Assisi. About the same to and from the CT. Of course, it is always advisable to spend a night in these locations so that you can stay longer and see more but these trips can be done in a day. We've done the Assisi one. Secondly, Grayline has a one-day bus tour of both San Gimignano and Siena. We've done that one as well. In Florence, Grayline is operated as CAF tours www.caftours.com

I guess it depends on how you are traveling. IF you have a car, you have more flexibility. This summer we stayed in Florence and hired a driver and did a day in Tuscany - Siena, a winery, a walled city (there are a bunch) and Pisa. He drove us all over through the countryside and then back to the hotel in Florence. Very fun and we felt we had a sampling of the sites. I shopped tours as well, including Walkabout Florence, "Day in Tuscany" if you want someone else to do the driving.

Happy Travels!

We were there about a month ago. We flew in to Pisa - then CT and back to Pisa - then bus to Florence. The reason to mention is that it is doable in one day. Thanks to Ryan Air, hourly buses from Florence SMN station take you to Pisa airport in less than one hour. From there, for 1.10 euro, city bus takes you either to Pisa train station (or further in to city to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa, etc.) https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/112414357348665256954/albums/5944425758503088721

CT is partially closed - only Manrola north is open (at least the official trails.)

Siena for sure! The bus was easy and direct. We took a tour with Franco Fadda and could not have been happier. Check him out on Trip Advisor; Franco Wine Tour.

Give Pistoia a try. Only 20 minutes by train & a very nice combination of an actual Italian town ( no tourists ) of 80,000 with a beautiful historic core.
