We will be staying for 4-5 nights at la crociona in montalcino this September and will be renting a car. If you have done something similar, we'd like to know what activities and exploration you have done-- We are very active travelers, love food, wine, culture--and learning when traveling -- Would like to know things other travelers have done basing out of Montalcino and if you have stayed at La Crociona.
We stayed at La Crociano for six nights a few years ago in May. I can recommend Grapolo Blu restaurant in Montalcino. We made day trips to Piensa, Volterra, Cortona, San Querico, and Montepulciano. In the area you can visit Santimo Abbey and Banfi Winery. Siena is an easy drive also but we opted to skip it since we had been there previously. Another restaurant located nearby is Barbi-they are also have a vineyard and our meals at the restaurant were excellent. It sounds like we did a ton of driving but these towns are not far apart. There are many wine boutiques in Montalcino (and the other towns) where you can sample Brunello.
That is a great link Henry you can see you have done this trip a few times and I appreciate you sharing. I'll read it closer and get my regional map out to get a better sense of your travels, Is it too long of a day to drive to Luca from La Crociona? We are flying into Bologna and spending time there and maybe a couple days in Florence So....any thoughts you have about this would be appreciated as a seasoned traveler We've been to Florence before and while like the city, open to other places to visit as well. Connie
Connie, I think Lucca is too far (probably take you close to 3 hours each way) because there is so much to see much closer.
While in Bologna consider a day trip to Ravenna. The mosaics are considered the crowning achievement of Byzantine art, and are only about an hour and a half by train.
