Day trips in Umbria/ Tuscany

We are staying a villa in Monterchi, outside of Arezzo. We are lookiing for short day trips (under an hour one each way). We were there five years ago and visited Sienna, Gubbio, Perugia, San Gimignano, Montepuciano, Angharia and Florence. Thanks.

I don't know if these meet your one hour criterion, but they would be close. Assisi 50 miles and close to that are Deruta (ceramics), Perugia (University), and Cortona (Under the Tuscan Sun). A bit farther, Todi, and the Umbrian wine country. Have fun.

If you like Piero della Francesca's paintings, go to Sansepolcro, about an hour or less from Arezzo. Piero did his best to make his hometown beautiful, and I think he succeeded. Todi is also beautiful (in the other direction). Montalcino also, if you like Brunello wine.

Thanks. I am also looking for something educational about cheese or olive oil production. I know May is not olive oil season but it would be nice to learn something about the process. Any suggestions?

There is an olive museum in the town of Trevi in Umbria, more historical than operational. Trevi (like many towns) lays claim to the highest quality olive oil in Italy. It's also a beautiful little town with views from every angle. If you contact the tourist offices in the towns you are interested in, they may be able to help with tours.
