I will be spending 3 weeks in Gaeta, Italy in late Sep/early Oct this year and will be staying in a vacation rental apartment. During that time, I would like to go to Rome and do some sightseeing. As I will not be renting a car, my plan was to take the train to Rome (about 1 ½ hours). Can anyone recommend any travel sites that offer daytime tours of Rome?
Is there any chance you could spend a night or three in Rome? 1 1/2 hrs is a heck of a long commute.
That said, check out Context Travel for some excellent tours. They have well-trained guides and smaller groups.
We have used Angel tours and were very pleased. Start with the TI in Termini. We have always had great tours arranged via the TI.
Agree with Frank. Hire a walking tour guide for the period you want. There are several options so you could pick different ones on different trips.

Thanks for the responses. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of taking the train into Rome and then spending a few days. I had seen the day tours that Viator offers and considered taking the ½ day Skip the Lines Vatican/Sistine Chapel on one day and the same type tour of the Coliseum/Ancient Rome on another day. And then on a third day just do the Hop on/off Bus tour that goes throughout the day through the city. That would probably mean 3 nights in Rome. Any accommodations (hopefully not outrageously expensive) suggestions that would be within walking distance of the starting points of these tours (Vatican Museum entrances, Colosseo Metro stop, and Via Marsala)?
I used Viators in Rome , Milan and Venice and like the tours very much.
I took a tour of the vatican in Rome and our guide was from Washington State, going to art school in Rome. He was GREAT.
I have also done the hop-on-hop-off bus to get oriented to where things were located in Rome.
I stayed a couple of nights at Hotel Contilia near the main train station and have heard of several hostel type hotels that are not too expensive.
How about airbnb, or things like "couch surfing" ??? I haven't tried those.
Thanks for the tips. I looked at airbnb and it seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. Has anyone ever used this site to find accommodations?
I have lots of friends who have used AirBNB and they love it.
I even have a friend who works for the company and she was telling me how carefully
then check out the locations.
She said she could look up any sites by number and look for reviews - the owners also get to review the renters.
i used airbnb in London two years ago and it worked out really well. it was nice coming home to our own place, it was a little further than i wanted, but it was exactly like it said it was. i just used that site to book our 34 nights in Italy,
