I will be staying in Siena but want to make some day trips to other towns. Can I do a day trip to Volterra, Lucignano and Orvieto from there? Would I be able to take the bus or train?

We had a car and went to Monteriggioni and Volterra, but you can take a bus. If you take public transportation, i think it's two busses. Might be worth looking for an organized tour. I think Orvieto is a bit far for a daytrip from Siena . Most train options are over two hours each way, but it can be done if that's what you want to do.
