Day Trips from Rome to Pompeii and Capri

Hi everyone,

I'm taking my kids to Italy mid June. We're booked for 2 weeks. So far we have 5 nights in Rome, 3 nights in Venice and then coming back to Rome for add'l 5 nights.

I was originally hoping to avoid multiple travel points with bags because of the kids, and to use Rome as a starting point for day trips out.

However, the more I look at the schedule, the more I realize that it might be very tiresome (due to distance to do that).

So my question is does it make sense to take a train to Sorrento directly from Venice and stay there for 2 nights and then go back to Rome for 3 nights before flying out? Is that easy to do?

And, in case we are unable to do that do to booking hotels last minute, any recommendations for a reputable tour company that handles day trips out of Rome?

Thank you so much!

Since you will have already had 5 nights in Rome, I would absolutely go to Sorrento for probably 4 nights. You'll want one day there to take the bus ride down the Amalfi Coast; one day to go to Capri; and one day for Pompeii.

Sorrento is a beautiful little town and a great change of pace from Rome & Venice. It's fairly easy to get to (you have to go through Naples and transfer to the Circumvesuviana train there).

Have you already booked plane ticket? If by chance you do not have your tickets yet, opt to fly out of a different city than the one you flew into. Florence?

Is there any way you can start your stay in Venice, then go to Rome then go to Sorrento? This would save a lot of backtracking. Also, you could spend a little more time in Rome if you wanted before going to Sorrento.

You would still have to go from Venice to Rome then to Naples and then on to Sorrento if you decided to go directly from Venice to Sorrento so it I would play it by ear and see how the kids are feeling after the 4 hour trip from Venice to Rome.

As for day trips, they are easy to do on your own and the kids will have lots more fun. The trip to Pompeii is very easy. Take the train from Rome to Naples, go downstairs in the Naples train station to the commuter line and head to Sorrento. After about half an hour you will come to the Pompeii Scavi stop. This is where you get off for the ruins. Very easy and a lot less money than a tour will cost you. If you decide after the ruins to continue on to Sorrento, just hop back on the same train til the end of the line.

Yep... already have a ticket to fly in and out of Rome.

And, yes... the idea was to do all the museums in the first 5 days in Rome and then just a few day trips and just hang loosed in the last 5.

I like the idea of just enjoying Sorrento towards the end. Will check in to see what's available hotelwise...

Donna, appreciate the info on getting to Pompeii.

Thanks to all!

I agree, if it's possible after landing in Rome, take the train to Venice for the first few days and continue to Rome of Sorrento after that. You'll be able to get a few hours sleep on the train and Venice is wonderful for unwinding and relaxing. You may want to spend the first 4 nights in Venice, then spend 5 days in Rome then go to Sorrento for 3 days with a trip to Pompeii along the way and spend the last two nights in Rome. This will be a much more relaxed pace and allow you to see the sites you wish to see.
