Day trips from Rome/The Pope's Sunday blessing at noon.

We are going to be on the RS Rome in seven days tour starting Oct 27, 2019. We have a couple of free days before the tour and would like any suggestions for an easy day trip away from the city.

Also any advice regarding going to the Vatican for the brief Pope's blessing on Sunday?

A trip to Orvieto from Rome would be ideal. It's a little over an hour by train. You can also train to Castel Gandolfo which is nearby Rome. Assisi could be another option but it's a little further away train ride from Rome.

For the Sunday blessing, which the pope delivers from a window on the third or fourth floor of the Apostolic Palace, there is no security to enter St. Peter's Square. Just arrive 15 to 20 minutes before the ceremony.

Thank you. I had thought of Castel Gandolfo. Do you know if there is public transportation from the train station to the top of the hill near Castel Gandolfo?

hey hey K.I.N
heard about these 2 tours from a friend that really enjoyed themselves. got outta the hustle and bustle of Rome for a nice day out in the country, short train ride from Rome.
google search beautiful countryside day trip: castelli romani
read all involved and where you go, ask to stop at ceralli.it. family owned bakery/pizza oven and the “best” porchetta, nonna is 90 years old and still baking. bring a bag in case you buy.
read italymagazine.com. Search lake nemi and it’s famous wild berries. the village of nemi well known for wild strawberries and make anything they can from them.
oldfrascatiwinetour.com. Read “about us” and “blog” to learn about family winery and village of frascati, roam around, stop at the pope’s summer home and garden.
hope this helps you out and enjoy if you decide to go.

According to the Trenitalia site you must take a train to Ciampino and change there for a bus to Castel Gandolfo.

If you go to http://www.trenitalia.com/ and put in Roma Termini as your starting point and Castel Gandolfo as your destination you'll see the options. Use a date in the upcoming week to see the details.

When the list of resulting trains comes up pick one of the options and under the "treno" column click on the "i" next to the regional train, this will bring up the list of stations this train will stop at before reaching Ciampino so you can count along the way to be sure you get off at the right one.

Thank you for the additional information. I see that in the next few weeks a person would have to take the bus from Ciampino according Trenitalia. However if I put in the date of 26 October for the trip it show the regional train going all of the way to Castel Gandolfo. I wonder if it is just a summer schedule that requires a bus connection or if the schedule for October is now incorrect. I'll try to find out more information as we get closer to the date. I really appreciate your information as I had no idea that we might have to change to the bus in Ciampino. I wonder if the bus stops at the train stop or goes up to the village.
