Day Trips From Rome - Naples or Pompeii?

Hello again! I will be spending four days and four nights in Rome next July. Besides Vatican City, I'm looking to find another easy day trip from Rome. Right now I can't decide between Naples and Pompeii. Which one would you recommend?

Pompeii is a 12 to 14-hour day trip from Rome, doable but a long day (nd an expensive one, too. Many choose to do them from more conveniently located Sorrento, and those who go to Pompeii often choose to add the Archeological Museum in Naples which has the artifacts that were recovered from Pompeii. BTW: Vatican is not a day trip from Rome, it's in Rome.

Naples and Pompeii are not easy day trips from Rome. Stay closer. Consult a map and pick out places no more than 200km away. This way you avoid travel time and tiredness. Ostia Antica and the Via Appia are wonderful. We havent been to Tivoli, but we hear many good things about it

I noticed that Rick recommends the Ostia Antica as well. Thank you for your suggestions!

Well, you go through aples to get to Pompeii, so you can really do both, but it is a long day trip, better with high speed trains, but still long. The Vatican and Ostica Antica I really do nor consider day trips, just more sights in Rome. Ostica can be done in an easy morning and taking only the Metro. For a good day trip, consider Orvieto, about an hour or just more by train, but a world away from Rome.

Hi...we were in Rome for a week in May. We struggled with the decision between Pompeii and Ostia Antica. After a few exhausting days just touring Rome we decided on the closer excursion to Ostia. We had a great time. They have a great little cafeteria there for lunch. The food was good and reasonably priced. The one thing I would suggest to make it more interesting, is to buy a book with overlays before taking in the ruins. We saw one in the gift shop once we were done. Wear comfy shoes. Lots of uneven ground. Good luck.

Well, just from what I saw while driving in Naples, I wouldn't go there, but GO TO POMPEII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT IS ARGUABLY THE MOST AMAZING PLACE I HAVE BEEN! You should go to Ristorante "La Pergola" in naples for the best pizza in the world. But thats all you should do in Naples. Go there for lunch and spend the afternoon in Pompeii. Trust me, its AMAZING!!!
