I'm looking for day trips from Rome. I will also stay in Sorrento for the Amalfi Coast so looking for other types of experiences. May travel to Orvieto for a few nights but not sure. Enjoy food, wine, hiking, outdoor fun, scenery and limited cultural sightseeing. Appreciate any thoughts or recommendations.
Hi Paul,
For day trips from Sorrento here are some good options:
- Go to Pompeii & then hike Mt. Vesuvius
- Take the boat to Capri for a day (you can see the blue grotto, hike, or just walk around and enjoy the island)
- Take the bus along the amalfi coast (stop at Positano & Amalfi).
Also, since you are going to be in Sorrento you should try going to Ristorante Delfino. We went there 2 nights in a row because the food was unbelievable. It's on the water in the Marina Grande (facing the marina on the far left). They get fresh seafood every day.
Have a great trip! :-)

I highly recommend Orvieto!
Ciao Paul - Try any of these three links for easy day trips from Rome - Good Luck!
Ostia Antica
Orvieto
Tivoli
I highly recommend Siena. It is 3 hours by bus or train.
In my opinion Siena is too far for a day trip. Six hours spent in transit is too far. If you want a lovely countryside town visit Orvieto, only an hour by train with frequent trains running throughout the day.
