We are taking the RS Venice, Florence, Rome tour in October. We have 5 days to extend either the beginning or end. Suggestions of day or nearby trips from Venice or Rome
This is a very commonly asked question on this forum. Do you have the RS books for Venice and Rome? They are loaded with suggested daytrips, along with all the logistics you need. Good luck.
From Rome, Orvieto seems to be a popular day trip. We picked a rental car up there when traveling from Rome to Siena and we liked it a lot. From Venice, a day trip to Verona would be nice. I loved Verona.
From Venice, your best bets for days trips would include (in no particular order) Bologna, Verona, Vicenza, Bassano del Grappa/Marostica and Padova.
In Rome, you could do daytrips to Ostia Antica, Orvieto, Tivoli, Lake Bracciano. You could also do the Catacombs of Rome or Aqueduct Park if you need a break from the city of Rome!
The Amalfi coast is extraordinary if you have 5 extra days from Rome. Even 2 or 3 days would be sufficient for Sorrento, Capri and Pompeii.
From Venice, I recommend the countryside. Although Verona, Padua and Vicenza are lovely, I would spend time on country roads and stopping to sample grappa, wine, etc.
Vicenza... If you like architecture, this city at nite is truly magical! Padua...Amazing covered walkways... Cloister/Basilica Verona...great Roman Ruins Ravenna...Best Mosaics
San Marino...Independent State "Old Italy "
