day trips from Rome

hi all,

we're taking our 19 and 13 yr old granddaughters to Rome in July and also want them to see the country side. i'm thinking a day trip or overnight to Civita di Bagno Reggio . Opinions? Ideas? Alternate suggestions? Tour company to use?

all ideas and suggestions welcomed! thanx.

One of the top daytrips from Rome is a 75-minute train ride from Roma Termini train station to the hilltown of Orvieto in Umbria. Beautiful town, beautiful cathedral, great shops & restaurants.

The following are listed in no certain order:
Ville di Este and Hadrian's Villa
Ostia Antica
Orvieto
Costiera Amalfi-long day
Pompeii-long day

Buon viaggio,

Civita is a good day trip if you rent a car. We lived in Rome and could never make a day trip work out until we but the bullet and rented a car. You can also stop easily at Parco dei Mostri and Lake Bracciano.

There's a lot less for a 13 year old and 19 year old to do or appreciate in Civita (one long pedestrian bridge and a very small unpopulated village at the end of the bridge) than there is in Orvieto (see Etruscan caves in multiple sites; good food; gorgeous cathedral; shopping; scenery and you get there on a pretty cool funicular from the train station) or even Pompeii, if you all are up for a longer day. My then-19-year-old daughter LOVED Pompeii, even though it was a chilly November day when we were there. Also: when I was at Civita in July 2016, it was BRUTALLY hot, and no place to escape the heat on that bridge, or much of anywhere in Civita. Orvieto will give more shade and cooler spots to escape possible heat. Even ditto Pompeii.

One of the key factors in your question is that fact that you're talking about July, when it can be scorching. For that reason I would NOT try to do Pompeii. If your g'daughters are into ruins, do Ostia Antica (Scavi) instead. Lots more shade trees and it's only an hour from the center of Rome. (FWIW, technically OA is within the enormous city limits of Rome.)

Orvieto is a good choice because:
1. less than 1.5 hours from Rome.
2. a hilltop town, so more potential for cool breezes.
3. Lots of shady spots
4. A much wider variety of options, as noted above.

For the reason given above, don't do CBR.
