We're planning a week long trip to Sicily in the spring with Palermo as our home base. We would like to make some day trips and are willing to rent a car. I'm thinking Cefalu would be nice, probably take the train there. Are there any wineries in the countryside nearby? Actually, any restaurant with a view would be great. Any other ideas?
Just the standard locations, Trapani, Erice, Monreale, Segesta. Depending on weather, San Vito Lo Capo.
If you start on Day 10 of @BethFL's wonderful Sicily trip report, she writes quite a bit about the area around Palermo. A week based out of Palermo sounds amazing & is next on our list after NY in Rome! https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/trip-reports/14-days-in-sicily-by-bus-train-and-car-in-may-but-with-november-weather
Two pretty mountain towns, both with castles and both close to Cefalù, are Caccamo and Castelbuono. Further east of Cefalù on the coast is the town of Santo Stefano di Camastra. The town is well known for its ceramics. Nearer to Palermo if you have any interest in Palermo's religious history, you might drive up Monte Pellegrino to the Sanctuary of Santa Rosalia. If you like beach towns, take a drive to Castellammare del Golfo and from there into Scopello or the Zingaro Nature Preserve for beautiful nature and coastal views. Take a look at Borgo Parrini, near Partinico. A very small old village being renovated in an artsy style somewhat reminiscent of Gaudí in Barcelona. Here is a link Borgo Parrini.
