after spending a day seeing the ruins and the buffalo mozarella factory in paestum and staying overnight there, i will have the next day to sightsee before having to leave at 5 pm to go to the naples airport . any suggestions as to what to do and how? more ruins or the amalfi coast?

I think your 2 best day trip options from Paestum are Pompeii or Amalfi/Ravello. For Pompeii, take the train to Pompei (the modern town, and a stop on the main train line to Naples) and then local bus or 25 minute walk from station to ancient Pompeii site. For Amalfi and Ravello, take the train to Salerno and then the bus to Amalfi town. There are local buses from Amalfi up to Ravello. Pompeii can take several hours and a lot of walking to thoroughly explore (lots to see), while Amalfi/Ravello would make for a more relaxing day. I don't think you could go wrong with either option. It may just come down to how you want to spend the day - busy or more relaxed.

thanks. i will have spent a full day at pompei, a day mt vesuvius and herculaneum and i will have a day in paestum, so the amalfi coast it is. thanks for the help on getting there.
