Day trips from Naples to Rome?

I am planning on visiting a friend in May who is stationed in Naples and was wondering if it would be possible to day trip to Rome from Naples to avoid paying for a hotel in Rome. Would this be possible or is Naples too far away?

And, just to "split the difference", there are also ES trains between Naples and Rome which take 105 minutes each way and cost 34 Euros! If you're in a hurry, take the AV train (70 minutes) for 44 Euros in each direction. Also check to see whether you qualify for any discount fares, such as the advance purchase "MINI" fare.

Mark, there are high-speed trains that make the non-stop journey from Naples to Rome about once an hour. Fare is 44E one-way and the trip takes 1hr10min. You can also take the slightly less frequent IC train for 22E. But the journey time is 2hrs as these trains are a bit slower and make more stops.

Mark, Is your friend stationed at the support site at Gricignano? If he is, he may be able to hook you up with a tour from base. Usually an overnite. There is a bus you can catch right outside base, that will take you to the Aversa train station, which is about 1h10m from Rome. The trip is very doable, but you will probably regret not getting a hotel room. Any other questions, PM me.
