Day trips from Milan

I'm working on a preliminary itinerary for a June trip.

The issue is that I've used air miles to book flights and my wife and I are flying different days. (I arrive in Milan 1 day before her and leave 2 days after). On Sunday, June 7..I was planning on a day trip to Lake Como and then come back in to Milan in the evening to meet her on Monday.

Below is the itinerary so far...suggestions on # of days for each city and day trips from Milan would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Kevin

Since you depart on Sunday, you really only have part of Friday and all day Saturday. I would recommend getting a reservation for The Last Supper on Friday afternoon and also visit the Duomo in Milan. For Saturday, I would suggest Lake Maggiore and Lugano, Switzerland. The RS Italy 2015 guidebook tells you how you can do this. I have been to Lugano and its a nice town.

You don't apecify any of your travel times or means between cities, but you can get cheap train tickets ahead of time on TrenItalia or Italo Treno. These tickets are usually available 120 days in advance. You can save a lot of money but you are tied into a specific train. You will need to decide if you need any flexibility on the trains.

Pompeii is a loooooonnngggg day trip from Rome. It takes over 3 hours to get there and another 3+ to return. Consider visiting Ostia Antica just outside Rome as an alternative. It is very large with lots to see and is only 30-45 minutes away from Central Rome.

It works. I'll give you another option.
I'm assuming that you both fly into and out of Malpensa.
Malpensa airport is closer to Lake Maggiore than it is to the city of Milan. Instead of going all the way to lake Como (even farther from Malpensa) for a day, then come back to Malpensa to meet your wife, you might consider spending your "single" day in nearby Lake Maggiore (either Stresa or Arona), then from there go back to Malpensa and head straight to Venice upon her arrival.
You might consider lake Maggiore even for the tail end of your trip, before coming home, when you are again alone.
From Malpensa to either Stresa or Arona there are buses. Another option is to take a taxi or shuttle bus from the airport to Gallarate (5 minutes) then from Gallarate take a train to Stresa or Arona (30 or 20 min respectively). Arona is closer, but Stresa is better located to visit the Borromee islands.

Bergamo is about an hour by train from Milano, as is Pavia/Certosa di Pavia. Roberto's suggestions are very good.
