Hi, we are staying in Milan for five days, we plan to use Milan as our base, can you please advise on great day trips and who to book thru
We are 40 and active
We will CT via train on a day so have other ideas such as lake Como and the like
We stayed in Milan for a few days and really enjoyed a day trip to Bergamo. We stayed on Lake Como separately. Perhaps you have reasons for basing in Milan and day tripping to Como but some on this forum will want to get you to reverse the amount of time you're allocating to Milan and Lake Como.
Bergamo - Well preserved medieval town centre
Piacenza - Duomo, Piazza dei Cavalli, Palazzo Farnese
Cremona - Duomo, Baptistery, Piazza del Commune, Violin Museum
Certosa di Pavia - Monastery complex
Consider beautiful, varenna on lake como. Easily done on a daytrip or overnight.
Another vote for Bergamo. There is a bus from the train station to Citta Alta.
3 hours and E12 pays for a trip to Venice. You can definitely put in a day trip there, especially if you catch an earlier trip through Milano Centrale. It's a fantastic adventure and if you catch one of the later high speed trains back (leaving around 8:00 PM), you'll get in before midnight and still have a chance to make your way back to your hotel/lodgings easily enough using public transportation, if you're comfortable with that. Had no trouble making connections using the Metro system line this way.
Venice is absolutely delightful. Put in a full day and you can hit many of the major sights. It's a fair bit of walking but if you manage it midweek, you'll have quieter byways.
Bergamo is another lovely place.
