My husband and I will be in Milan for 4 days at the beginning of April (our daughter is in school there, that is reason for long stay there). We will go to Lake Como for one day trip. Any suggestions for another day trip out of Milan? Would like to stay around 1 hour train ride one way. Is Lake Maggiore a good pick, even after Como or are they so similar that we should pick a different destination for 2nd day trip? Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I'd suggest Verona for your 2nd day trip rather than Lake Maggiore. Verona is 1:19 from Milan by Eurostar or 1:35 by the less expensive intercity trains, and has lots to do and see. If checking train schedules, the station is Verona Porta Nuova.
Thanks Frank, a friend of mine also suggested Verona...I will check into it.
Bergamo is an hour train ride from Milan. It would be a nice break from the fast pace of Milan. You can read more about it here: http://www.italyheaven.co.uk/bergamotourist.html
Does any one else have any other suggestions?? Any info/ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Spent a week in Milan a few years back and took day trips. One to Lago Magiore (train to Stresa [sp?]) and boat to the islands. One day to Bologna (definitely worth it). One day to the Santa Margherita, via Genoa (might have been a over an hour though), and from there took the boat to Portofino. Returned to SM and went to a couple of towns in the Cinque Terra. You can't make the wrong choice no matter what you choose, it's all good and all worth seeing.
Also, don't forget Milan itself. There's tons to see. Especially liked Peck's for food.
Have a great trip.
Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. I will check out all of the mentioned destinations and make a choice. I really appreciate the responses!! Ciao!
