Day trips from Livorno

Next May, we are getting to Rome via cruiseship. One stop along the way is Livorno. We have already been to Florence and Pisa. We thought we would like to visit Lucca this time. We arrive in Livorno 7am and by the time we get to disembark it will probably be closer to 9am. The ship then leaves at 7PM, so we probably have to be back on board around 6pm. What would be the best way for us to get to Lucca from Livorno? We really don't want to spend a lot of time travelling by train and bus. Should we rent a car? Hire a driver? Hire a guide? We are able bodied and love to walk so once we are in Lucca, being on foot is not an issue.
Also, if you think there is another place we should see instead of Lucca, we'd appreciate your opinion.

I loved Lucca, so I agree it's a great option from Livorno. For details of getting from Livorno to Lucca, look at Rick Steves Mediterranean Cruise Ports (second edition now available). It will also be invaluable for your other cruise stops. In addition to any replies you get here, be sure to look at Cruise Critic. Here's their Italy Ports Forum: http://tinyurl.com/bwqtmhk

We were there a year ago on a cruise and had the same idea as you. We went to Lucca and loved it!! It is so easy to get there by train. Here is what you do....take a shuttle from the dock into Livorno. Transfer to a bus which takes you to a train station. Take a quick 45 minute or so train ride to Lucca. That's it!! We rented bikes and rode around and explored. It was so relaxing. Not crowded at all. So charming and stress free. You will love it, we did!! As the other person said, get the RS cruise guidebook and it has all the detailed instructions I explained above.

Thank you all for the good advice. I think we feel more confident that with public transportation we would still have enough time to enjoy Lucca. And, I will buy the Mediteranean cruise guide book.
