My husband and I have the good fortune of being given a trip to Lake Como, and will be staying in Como for 6 full days. From everything that I've read, 4 days is more than enough time to visit Lake Como. Any recommendations for good day trips from Lake Como to other areas that can be taken without a car?
Where are you staying on Lake Como? It's a big lake.
You might think about taking the train to Tirano and then traveling on the Bernina Express train up into Switzerland.
This is going to depend largely on where on Lake Como you are staying. If on the western shore, your carless travels are limited to bus, taxi or ferry. Once on the eastern shore you have train access. If staying in Como itself, your daytrip options change dramatically.
Hi All, thanks for the feedback so far. I've updated my original post to include that we will be staying in Como. The trip will be for 6 full days.
From Como town, you have many options. Milan is definitely worth the day trip (Duomo, Pinacoteca Brera...). So is Lugano, Switzerland. Both are easily reached by train from Como (Como San Giovanni station for Lugano, the same one or Como Nord Lago & Como Borghi for Milan).
Bergamo is an easy day trip from Como. Consider if you are willing to take a train for two hours and Turin is doable, as well as Laveno.
