Day trips from Florence to Tuscany

My husband and I will be staying in Florence in early September. On the last day of our Florence trip we plan on doing a day trip to Tuscany. Any recommendations? I saw a bike tour which stops at a few wineries. But that was in the region closest to Florence. What about a day trip with a driver to a further tuscany region like Montalcino? We went to San Fran this past spring and did a bike tour of wineries in Sonoma Valley and loved it! I'm wondering if we should try the same thing or something new? We are both the outdoorsy type:) Thanks!

Um, if you're in Florence, you're already in Tuscany. :-) I'm guessing you mean you want to see other parts of Tuscany, right? Siena is the obvious first choice. It's amazing. Have a great time.

Thanks for the info. Yes, we looked at that exact bike tour last night and I think we are going to book it! The reviews are great and priced at 80 Euro/person isn't too bad!

Montalcino without a car/driver could be an interesting day trip from Florence. I would guess you would need about 3 hours each way. I am not aware of any bike tours in town there, but I could see the area being a lot of fun - it's quite beautiful. There's a monastery that's quite popular south of town a few kms as well as numerous wineries. Biking up to the city would be challenging however, but if that's your cup of tea, by all means :) I did a quick google search and found this: http://www.montalcino-tuscany.com/taxi.htm To get to Montalcino - take the train (not the bus) to Siena and book the TRA-IN bus to Montalcino. We were able to find the schedule online, though it was hard with a bus company named that...

Just saw your posting. Did you already book the wine tour per bike? We did that last year through Art Viva, and the tour started near the Duomo, and we went from there up the hillside to a beautiful villa for winetasting, then on to Chianti for a fabulous lunch. The bikes were mountain bikes (Bianchi), and it was a fabulous experience. What a way to see the Tuscan countryside, enjoy wine tasting, and have an Italian lunch. It was very comfortable riding, and our guide, Andrea, was gtreat.
Would definitely recommend.
