Day trips from Florence or Rome

We are spending one week in Rome, and one week in Florence, early July. How can I get to Assisi for a one day trip and back to my hotel? I have been searching the train from Rome and the train from Florence and they show only one trip a day and it leaves at night. I would like to keep my hotel booking to either Florence or Rome and not stay overnight in Assisi. And are there buses to Assisi or Siena from Florence? I can't find a way to look that up. Also it is confusing to figure out what station to book to or from. The names are not clear. Please help.

Check the official Italian Railways website to check train schedules:http://www.trenitalia.com
You must type the stations in Italian;

  • Rome = Roma Termini
  • Florence = Firenze S. M. Novella

There are several trains traveling to Assisi either from Rome or Florence but it will take anywhere from 2.5 - 3 hours to get there.

Once you arrive at the train station( Assisi), you can take a taxi or a bus to the city center.

Since most of the trains are Regionale, check within the next 7 days of today's date to see the schedules.

There are buses from Rome (Tiburtina station) to Assisi & travel time is about 3 hours:http://www.sulga.it

Siena is a better option for a day trip from Florence as the bus only takes about 75 minutes:http://www.busfox.com/timetable/
