Hi this summer we will be spending 10 days in Florence with our two children, after leaving Venice but before heading to Rome. Does anyone knows of any day trips we can take from Florence in which we may use some type of public transportation? We have been there before but did not venture out of town due to our limited time, however it would be nice to see the outskirts of Florence this time. Thanks!

Siena or Lucca & Pisa (both are close) or Arezzo or Pistoia are some of obvious choices which are served by frequent public transportation. But practically every town can be reached by bus, even if not along a rail line.
But since you are in Florence for 10 days you can have many more to choose from.
Look at the website below. Choose the locations in the province of Florence, or Siena, or Arezzo, or Prato.

You can also take the bus to the hill town of San Gimignano.
