Day Trips from Florence and Rome

Hello, I will be in Italy in late April early May, and i am wanting to go to possible Siena from Florence and both Ostia Antica ,Orvietta from Rome. I see that i can buy direct trains to the areas but does anyone have any information on any day pass or any tips on those day trips to make it easier. Also if i goto Ostia Antica, has anyone also gone to the beach there? and is a visit to the ruins and a beach day doable?

you dont need a pass for any of these. Siena is an easy bis trip from Florence; get two tickets so you have a return. The buses run 2 or 3 an hour and schedule is posted at the stop in the center where you are dropped off. We always aim for the second to last bus to return.

Ostia Antica is o Rome public transport and easy -- take a picnic amd a map. We were not interested in the beach so someone else will have to help you there.

Orvieto is best done by one of the Regionale trains, only taking some 10 or 15 minutes more than the Intercity, but at half the price. You can buy them the day (evening) before, but make sure they are made out for your travelling day. And don't forget to stamp (validate) them before getting on the train. To avoid an expensive taxi in Orvieto, take the funiculare across the road from the railway station (tickets at the station kiosk). The train schedule can be found on www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en
Siena is best done by bus. The train means a long uphill walk (or a taxi). The Siena bus leaves from the bus station (autostazione) across the road from the main railway station. Its terminal in Siena is the Piazza Gramsci/Via Tozzi. Schedule: www.sitabus.it/tiemme_131r_a-siena-firenze_rapida_dal110616/

Yes, you can go to the ruins at Ostia Antica and then the beach; local train to the ruins and then a bus to the beach.

There are some nice restaurants in Ostia Antica, especially near the tower near the entrance to the ruins. Buses to the beach stop near the restaurants.

what about hitting Orvieto on the way from Florence to Rome?

There's no luggage storage in Orvieto, so you'll want to spend the night - which is a good idea since you'll get to see the town before/after the day trippers.

Both Siena and Orvieto are much better after dark when the day tripping hordes have left.. Both are walkable from end to end and Orvieto has a night time rampart walk which is superb. (Rick steves Guide book).. If you haven't completed your bookings I would urge you to consider staying at least a night in Orvieto and Siena.

Thats a good idea! Now im thinking of going from Florence early to Siena and stay the day and night there then goto Orvieto int he morning for a day trip and end in Rome in the evening. I know the luggage could be an issue in Orvieto but me and by friend travel real light, like a smaller backpack only.
