Ok...go...What are your favourite day trips from Florence that don't cost a lot? We are doing a one day bike trip (Winery/food/Castle) that is $100 so would like to do another day that doesn't cost a lot. We were thinking San G or Lucca but maybe there is something better to see.
Siena
Chianti Hills
San Gimignano
Volterra
Arezzo+Cortona
Lucca+Pisa
Just to name some of the most famous that you can do by train or bus for less than 15€ each way.
Are you flying out of Florence or Pisa airport? We flew in and out of Pisa when we visited Florence and prior to flying back we visited the city of Pisa and the tower and then walked back to the airport to catch our flight.
My top choice is Siena.
We wanted to go to Lucca, but couldn't fit it into our schedule. :-(
San Gimignano would be a good choice. We also loved Volterra. We had a car and got off to an early start, visiting San Gimignano in the morning and Volterra in the afternoon/evening. We could have spent the entire day at either.
If you like history, there's both Etruscan and Roman sites at Volterra. If you consider Volterra, plan to stay through dusk. There's a promenade on the western side outside the town. It offers a spectacular view of the town and the dusk light is magical.
Siena is also worth a visit, but it would be busier and probably more expensive to see.
Take the train !
Lucca
Siena
Bologna
All of these are wonderful day trips.
And you can ride the bus up to Fiesole above Florence for lunch and spectacular views of the area !
We used tour company Walk About Florence for an all day tour of three different towns, including Pisa and lunch at anoon organic farm. Cost was around 100.00 each and a 12 hour day. One of the highlights of our trip!
Siena. Easy bus ride from Florence that drops you right off at the wall. Follow Rick's self-guided walking tour. Enjoy!
Our family will be there in June and considering day trips as well. I've looked into a few bus tours. After reading this thread I'm wondering if we should just do it on our own traveling by train. One of the perks of the bus tour was a lunch and wine tasting stop. Does anyone know if there is a winery we could reach without having a car?

Good day trips via train from Florence: Lucca, Greve, Cortona, Fiesole (by bus from Florence), also Volterra is lovely but can be quite difficult...train & bus combo to get there and infrequent at best. I always try to visit a town on "market day" which is fun.
