Kat - a lot of great hill towns are accessible from Florence as a day trip - Volterra, S. Gimigiano, etc. You can visit Lucca as a day trip too.

My favorite would be driving down the S222 - the Chianti Road - through Greve (market day is Saturday and it is a great market) down to Panzano (my favorite little village) great restaurants and the most famous butcher in Tuscany are there - lots of wine tasting opportunities too.

Have fun!

Montepulciano and Siena would certainly be worth your time.

Try Siena and San Gimignano. Around $70.00 USD.

In April I took a daytrip from Firenze to Arezzo by train. It is a nice, small city with Roman ruins, a beautiful park at the top of the town, and reminders that the film "Life is Beautiful" was filmed there. There is a wonderful large piazza in the upper part of town which is surrounded by a church, shops, and places to eat. It took about 90 min to get there; trains are frequent, but stop many times. That way you can enjoy the countryside as you travel. The bus station and train station are close to each other.
