I want to visit both La Verna and Camaldoli, and it seems that both are reached by local bus leaving from Bibienna (La Verna south of Bibienna, Camaldoli north of Bibienna). Not taken local buses to remote sites in Italy. Any thoughts or experiences? Would it be possible to visit them on day trips, or should I stay overnight in Bibienna after each visit. I'm at something of a loss to decide if these visits are possible, but really want to go... particularly to Camaldoli. Thanks for any suggestions.
Have you considered renting a car for locations not served by train?
Kent, I'll be on my own and am concerned about driving without someone to serve as "navitagor", particularly in this mountainous region... hence my desire to use public transportation. Have you driven in this area and found it to be manageable? Thanks
No, I haven't driven to either of those places. And after taking a quick look at the driving routes on a terrain map, I can see all the switchbacks and why you're concerned about driving, especially if you ended up having to drive part of the way after dark. A GPS would take care of the navigation problem, but you still have to do the driving. Especially in the dark if you tried to stretch it into a day trip--not good. I hope you find someone who has personal experience doing these trips by local bus.
