Day tripping from Venice

My son and I will be spending 3 weeks in Italy this Sept. landing in Milano, training to Domodossola for several nights. Then on to Venice for a week.

I was looking at the map, trying to figure out where to stay so we wouldn't be too far from the train for day trips. Is this a goo idea? I have stayed by the Rialto bridge two times before but it took a bit to get to the train. Also would like to find some cicchetti ??? Looked last time but never found where any were being served.

We will train to Florence for a week, and day trip, then to Rome for a week and day trip. Have not done this before.

Also, my son is an adult and I plan to book two rooms, Do any hotels have rooms for only one pierson??? Or will they charge for two anyway.

tnx much

You do realize that from Milano to Domodossola and then to Venice will involve backtracking from Domodossola back to Milano and then to Venezia, right?

Hotel Santa Lucia and Hotel Abbazia are very very near the train station.

Most hotels have single rooms (for 1 person).

Hotels do have some single rooms at about 80% the price of double occupancy double room. So you will have to pay about 60% more getting 2 single rooms.
Go to booking.com to find hotel locations near where you want to be. The Continental in Venice is close to the station and has single rooms.
Take Alessandro's Cicchetti tour get the lowdown on these. 35 euro per person includes wine and food at 3 bars in about 2 hours. alessandro@schezzini.it

If you are staying in Venice for a week, another option would be to rent an apartment. There are many, many apartments that would likely be cheaper than a hotel. You could either rent a one bedroom with sleeper sofa - or a number of two bedrooms for less than two hotel rooms. If you stay fairly close to a vaporetto stop, getting to the train station is easy from most places in Venice.

I second the idea of Alessandro Schezzini's chiccetti tour. It's a lot of fun and reasonably priced. You can also do a google search for Chiccetti in Venice and will come up with several websites that will give you ideas. At least one of the sites I visited has a map showing where they are located.
