Day Tripping between Destinations--Not in other posts

Hello. I have searched through this board and others pretty thoroughly and haven't found an answer to this question. My wife and I are flying in and out of Rome and will be in Rome, Florence, and Venice. (I know the best way for some is to go open jaw, but the airfare with our AMEX points was too good!)

I want to make side/day trips out of our travel between Rome and Florence and Florence and Venice and have some questions about buying tickets and getting on/off trains on the same day (Rome-Orvieto-Florence ; Florence-Padua-Venice).

1) Do I have to buy an IC ticket for Rome to Orvieto, then Orvieto to Florence? Or, can I just buy a ticket from Rome to Florence, jump off at Orvieto in the morning and then back on an afternoon train to Florence?
My travel days are all during the week (and late March-early April) so I do not anticipate that I will need reservations.

2) Also, any feedback on taking the night train from Venice to Rome vs. a quick ES mid-day to allow for time in Venice in the AM and Rome in the PM and a beautiful view of the countryside during the afternoon?

Thanks to all for your help!

Michael,
You cannot jump on any train that requires a reservation. yes you can get on a train that does not require a reservation as long as your ticket is valid. The validity of the ticket (from the time you stamped it) can vary by distance or region.

Why bother? Since the tickets are basically by distance just get two tickets, Rome to Orvieto and Orvieto to Florence. You will end up paying about a euro more the a ticket from Rome to Florence.

Interestingly, if you put Rome/Florence into the fields on www.trenitalia.com, you will see mostly non-stops. You won't be stopping at Orvietto on these Eurostars. You won't see many R trains on the site but they do depart all day long to the north.

The only trains that you can really hop on and off are the Regionale (R) trains. The tickets for these trains just show the origination point, the destination and class. The ticket is open for 6 months. IC trains are fast disappering in favor of the ICPlus trains which do require a reservation.

Plan on buying a separate R train ticket to Orvieto and one from Orvieto to Florence.

On the night train from Venice to Rome, there is one but the daytime trip takes only 4.5 hours. Hopefully, you are not taking the night train from Venice to Rome in order for an early flight out of FCO. If yes, you won't make it.
