In response to another posting several people touched on the idea of taking a tour from Rome to Pompeii therefor bypassing the two trains and and all-day excursion. Two names were mentioned - Carrani and EnjoyRome. Has anyone else had experience with these two tours and would you recommend them? Has anyone else taken a day tour to Pompeii that was exceptionally good? We are travelling with young teens who might not be able to take a full-day excursion. Thanks!
I would use the EnjoyRome shuttle service to Pompeii with two teens. The shuttle service is just that - transport to Pompeii - no guide, no lunch. This would allow you to visit the ruins on your own, pack a picnic lunch and go at your own pace. If you decide you want a guide you could hire one at the entrance to sight or rent audio guide. Plus the Enjoy Rome shuttle is about half the price of the Carrani tour.
I'd be curious to know the price of this "shuttle" service between Rome and Pompei, to compare to the cost of travelling there by train (84 Euros on the AV trains plus 4.80 Euros for the Circumvesuviana shuttle between Naples and Pompei).
NOTE: The AV trains between Rome and Naples are the fastest (1 hr. 21 mins.) and most expensive options. However, you can save 50% by taking the slower (approx. 2 hrs) Intercity (IC) trains, which are still good trains. Doing so may result in spending less time in Pompei. In the other posting on this topic, I gave an illustration of the schedules assuming one wanted to take the AV trains in both directions to minimize the travel time and maximize the time spend "on the ground" in Pompei.
GAC,
Go to the enjoyrome.com website and look up the price to compare. I am thinking the train would be cheaper than the enjoyrome shuttle. I used the shuttle in 2003 and was very satisfied. I am a very experienced traveler in Italy and I just did not feel like making train connections. You either spend time or money and for me, this was a very comfortable option. My two sons were young adults and they were happy. The service is basic; shuttle service with no lunch or guides. It was drop-off and pick-up situation. From time to time I return to their website and I've noticed they've added more services to their operation.
Incidently, I do not work for them or have any interest with their office. I found them in frommer's guide and was happy with their service.
Buon viaggio,
RB
I checked the website twice, and find no quoted prices. That's why I asked if anyone knew. I suppose one need to contact the tour group by e-mail or otherwise.
Thanks Rose!
(I was the originator of the other question).
Appreciate you asking for more details.
Let me know if you find anything out.
Here is the link to the tour service that I used this past July. We did Christian Rome, Rome by night with diner, and Naples and Pompei. The tours were wonderful. The Naples/Pompei tour included lunch for the price, it was by bus and the guide told us of the countryside as we traveled to the two cities, it was nice to relax and see all of the beautiful countryside on the way.

WOW! Thanks all for the replies! Am looking into the options mentioned and will let you all know what I find out. Am especially interested in the EnjoyRome shuttle service if it is reasonably priced. Back soon...
The Enjoy Rome Shuttle is 50 euro for people 26 & under and 60 euro for those over 26. Considering the train is 106 euro per person for high speed trains, the shuttle is economical.
I too am considering a day trip to Pompeii from Rome. I feel like a moron but I have looked at the enjoyrome site repeatedly and can't find the shuttle info...my question is this - are there multiple departure/return times in a single day or is this one bus that leaves at one time and returns at a set time? Thanks so much to the folks that post - the info I've found has been very helpful!
Hi All,
I asked SamSn to help us out with how to locate the info on the shuttle from EnjoyRome. Hope he/she will respond ('cause I can't find it either!)
Finally found the web page (which was being improved) however the "tour availability" calendar is showing a blank for all of 2010 so I don't know if that means the shuttle isn't going to be available or if they just aren't booking that far out. Have e-mailed and will let you know when they reply.
Enjoy Rome's Shuttle:
http://enjoyrome.com/walking/shuttle_tour_pompeii.html
The shuttle operates April 1-October 31 only on Tuesdays and Fridays.
The cost of the AV train round-trip between Rome and Naples, in second class, plus the cost of the round-trip Circumvesuviana commuter train to Pompei, is just under 90 Euros per adult.
The cost of the IC train round-trip, plus the Circumvesuviana train, is just under 50 Euros per adult.
Bear in mind that the AV train is really, really fast: 1 hr. 21 mins. to Naples, much faster than the bus shuttle. Even the IC train is fast: just slightly over 2 hrs. in each direction.
The cost of the EnjoyRome bus shuttle for adults over 26 is 60 Euros (according to Sam).
All considered, the bus shuttle seems a good deal.
Dominika of Enjoy Rome says that they will be running the Pompeii Shuttle next year but that they will not be posting the schedule until January 2010. So...file this info away somewhere for now!
And thank you to everyone who had input, I think for the comparative cost and ease of travel that we will take the shuttle!
