What are your recommendations re: a day trip (with a tour company) from Rome to Naples/Pompeii or just to Pompeii? Should I do both locations, or just Pompeii? Do you have a tour company or person you recommend? There will be 4 adults, and our trip is in late April, 2015.
Check the prices they charge and see because it's something you can really do on your own.
There are several trains that take you to Naples in 70 min (way faster than any car or bus). Pompeii is just a short commuter train ride away from Naples. If you leave Rome early you can easily do both. You might want to do Pompeii, which is a bit farther, first for at least 2-3 hours. Then, in the early afternoon, you can come back to Naples and end your day there. The last high speed train back to Rome is at 7:30pm (although there are more slower ones later in the evening).
If you go with a bus tour, you may not have a lot of time for both because by bus from Rome to Pompeii is more than 3 hours each way (they can't go 180 mph like the trains)
You can hire a guide at the Pompeii entrance if you want. There are a bunch of them ready to sell their services and they speak foreign languages (the funniest thing for me was listening to a Pompeii guide talking in Japanese with a Neapolitan accent).
Good suggestions. I will explore that! (I've already listened to the Pompeii walking tour on the RS app.)
Hi Sharon - as a reminder, which you likely already know, you can visit the site of Pompeii for buildings and other structures, and a few reproductions (like the small statue of the faun at the House of the Faun), but many of the treasures, mosaics, statues, and other artifacts from Pompeii are on display at the museum in Naples, so visiting both will give you a more complete experience.
