In 2010 I am planning a short day trip from Livorno and am considering visiting Viareggio. Other than the beach I can't find much information on it. Can anyone recommend a good restaurant? Any interesting boulevards of local shops? What about Lake Massaciuccoli?

Viareggio is pretty much a beach town. Why not go to Lucca?

You don't say when you're going to be there, but the comment about Viareggio being only a beach resort was spot on. We made the mistake of going to Viareggio in September with the plan to stay there two nights. Their summer season was already over and there wasn't anything to do. We hightailed it back to Florence. One of the best decisions we made during the trip.
