Day trip to Tuscany hill towns from Montepulciano

I want to book Roberto but his trips depart from Florence and I’m already staying in Montepulciano for 3 nights. Any ideas on a day trip from Montepulciano to Siena and other hill towns ? I was also thinking of just renting a car in Chiusi.

I would rent a car. This is an area where I, a fervent supporter of train travel, always rent a car. The drive between Montepulciano and Montalcino is delightful. Pienza makes a good lunch stop and is lovely. Don't miss the abbeys of Sant'Antonio and Monte Oliveto Maggiore, but check hours as they have an annoying habit of closing at noon for several hours.

Yes, out of 18 trips to Europe, the ONLY time we have ever rented a car was for four days while staying in Montepulciano (renting in Chiusi). We did this because we had a previous stay in Montepulciano where we tried to do day trips by bus and ended up pretty frustrated.

If you don't want to rent a car, contact Meuble il Riccio to see if the owners still offer custom day trips in a vintage Italian car. When I stayed there a few years ago, two women staying there arranged a day trip with them and had really great things to say about it. Not sure if they would go all the way to Siena.

The abbeys mentioned above are great suggestions, but the name of the first one is sant'antimo, 10 minutes from montalcino, in a fantastic location
